Retro Concept - Kumi by sunnykoda Retro Concept - Kumi by sunnykoda
My first piece for the fan-project "The Art of Skies of Arcadia II" (a game that never existed much to the dismay of me and countless other fans) features an early concept for the heroine Kumi!

Kumi is the grand-daughter of the air pirate Aika. She grew up in Cambria, city of the Silver Isles, listening to her grandmother's tales of adventure and dreaming of her own pirate ship. Unfortunately for all her enthusiasm she is still young and has never travelled beyond the islands of her home.

Just for the fun of it I tried to emulate the style of the original Skies of Arcadia character concepts, using a brush that has an effect not unlike the copic markers I wasted so much money as a teenager. This isn't the final design for our hero, but I feel it's important to start by understanding the source material that inspired such love for the original game.

She looks just like Aika! I want to set a game 70-80 years after the origina, but I can't bear to leave out my favourite character. Because I felt that so much of SoA's appeal came from Aika's character it made sense to base the protagonist on her. Also redheads <3 <3 <3

That would bve neat, except it would probably end up like Final Fantasy 10/2, where the game is pretty much targeted at Miley Cyrus fan girls.

It's something I think about a lot - how do you sell a female protagonist to a predominantly male audience? But I think if the character shares enough of the same values (like Commander Shepard, Lara Croft, Nariko) as the audience then gender is less important.

I sadly haven't played any of those games (I grew up on Nintendo), but I think the trick is to not go to any personality extremes. The character shouldn't be too "girly" or she'll turn people off, but she can't be too gender neutrel either, or else the character will see dry and boring.

Oh my groodness.... you definitely pulled off the style! :D  I don't know how you did it, but it's just dead-on.

And aside from that, she looks lovely. :D

I actually used to draw just like that, having learned from 90s Manga and copying Mario, Sonic etc. I used to use Copic markers too so it was cool to try and replicate the texture in Photoshop.

I hope you also like the newer stuff I've got planned :)

Excellent job with this! everything from the style to the character and her clothes just scream Skies of Arcadia! I have always hoped for a sequel, so it's always great to see concepts like this :)

Also... I want her shirt and those gloves o_o

The shirt is inspired by her grandfather...

I really hope Sega do one day return to Arcadia. They make such awesome RPGs.

This is fantastic! The style looks canon, and I could definitely see her being the main character of a new SoA game :D

ty - I'll be using my own style from here out, but I wanted to kick off with a traditional piece as I love the old-school manga style and owe much of my inspiration to it.

Glad you like it! I'm trying to write out a rough storyline to keep my designs together, maybe some airships next?
